Many attempts have been made to ‘explain’ Shostakovich, man and music, and in some of them a political agenda isn’t hard to make out. But does any of this actually explain the music’s extraordinary power to move modern audiences? Stephen Johnson doesn’t pretend to have all the answers, but in this illustrated talk he hopes to shed some light on this uniquely wonderful composer, and on why he speaks to us so directly today.
