Ninfea Cruttwell-Reade Scenes from Under Milk Wood (Welsh premiere)
Under Milk Wood, Dylan Thomas’ moving and hilarious account of a spring day in a small Welsh coastal town, commissioned by the BBC and first broadcast on radio in 1954 as ‘a play for voices’, has inspired works in many genres.
Rather than setting the entire text, Scottish-born composer Ninfea Cruttwell-Reade has instead chosen a number of scenes from the play. Following the narrative structure of Thomas’ original, the piece unfolds across four sequences – Dreams, Morning, Afternoon and Evening. Cruttwell-Reade has crafted a diverse blend of aria, recitative, patter song and spoken word, which advance the drama in an individual and innovative way, bringing alive a range of Dylan Thomas’ colourful characters.
