When Sargent died a century ago, he was considered a relic of the belle époque. However, thanks to an intensely psychological engagement with his subjects, the artist reveals a more contemporary outlook. Embracing the queer and the neglected, cultural historian Gavin Plumley goes beyond the polished surface of Sargent’s world.
